BMW is recalling the 2017 C 650GT and C Evolution scooters because their front wheels may be missing the required DOT markings.
Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 120 Sections 5.2(b) and (c) require rims to bear markings with the rim size and DOT designation. These markings are important as they specify the correct tire size for these scooters. The recall affects units produced in May and June, affecting 28 C 650GT scooters and 9 C Evolution electric scooters; the C 650 Sport uses a similar wheel but it is not included in the recall.

According to documents submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration by BMW, a tool used in the production of the rims did not have the relevant DOT markings. The problem was first identified on July 11 during quality checks at BMW’s motorcycle preparation center. Recall procedures were initiated three days later. As of this writing, BMW had received no reports of any accidents or injuries related to the issue.
BMW dealers will inspect the front rims of recalled scooters and, if required, replace them with rims bearing the correct markings.
