The term harkens back to the earliest days of motorcycle racing when competition was an A-to-B affair, and there were too few paved roads to limit competition to tarmac only?a scramble, as they?d come to be called. As such, racers crudely modified their machines to work on a mix of surfaces, adding more aggressive rubber, maximizing suspension travel and hiking up fenders to clear mud.
The manufacturers eventually realized the marketability of a multi-purpose machine, and even after competition evolved, demand persisted for bikes that could (more or less) do it all. The popularity of the scrambler has ebbed and flowed through the years, but it?s safe to say demand is as strong as ever for these bikes.
